Jake Spades Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Hey, we’re a 5 piece punk/thrash band from up north where its cold and snow covered half of the year. We spend our time jamming, drinking whatever is cheap and playing as many shows as we can. It’s a pretty diverse lineup. When I formed the band a year ago, I picked up the best players I could find for the project and we started writing right away. Im pretty stoked on the stuff we’ve done so far and it keeps getting better. Its great to have a diverse group of musicians putting in their input and making the songs work .

2.So far you have released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
We border between old school punk and 80s thrash as far as sound goes. The tracks are numbered the way we wrote them so you can hear how the sound changes a bit and the band gets a little tighter as the writing process continues. For an album that was recorded in a basement on garage band and then produced by a friend , I think it turned out great and we are super proud of it.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Prior to this I was in a horror punk band called Frightlight. I write a lot about that kinda stuff. I’m a big fan of 80s slasher flicks and low budget horror movies
Track one is centered around Rowdy Roddy Pipers “They Live” and speaks to the same imagery that was represented in the movie ( seriously if you haven’t seen it stop whatever you’re doing and check it out.
Rise is about zombie superheroes . I really dug the Blackest Night series. It’s the first part of a trilogy of songs about it. We just finished writing the second part, Fear corps, and that’ll be on our next recording. The third part is being worked on and when it’s done we’re going to release a special edition with all three tracks and hopefully some amazing artwork in the style of the graphic novels. We would love to have Ivan Reis do up something!
The other tracks on the album veer away from that kinda content and range from an unrelenting need to be fast , loud and unapologetic, to the public hanging of Saddam Hussein
I like to change it up and write whatever comes to mind

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Jack Spades'?
We all know what the king does, the queen,  etc. Jacks are knaves, and rogues. They’re the ones that do all the “dirty” work. There was a period of time where every band in our town had OF in their name. I left it out on purpose

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
It’s been a pretty great first year. We debuted as direct support at a Dayglo Abortions show and since then we’ve been able to share the stage with Ripcordz, BFGs, Bam Margera, and a bunch of other amazing acts.  We hit the road a few times this year and had the opportunity to do a mini tour with Anvil . those were some super fun shows. We played our first Spiderfest this year and we’re definitely gonna hop on the lineup next year. We’re pretty straight up. We like to move on stage, interact with the crowd  and have a good time. I HATE when a band just stands around up there. It should be exciting to watch a band play live.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
This month we’ve got some great shows lined up. We will be playing a 30th anniversary party for our local skate /record store , The Rad Zone wth our friends in Ripcordz and we’ve got a direct support set opening for Gob at the end of the month. We’ll spend the winter writing and recording and then hit the road for a bit next year. I hope to work on visas and whatnot and play some shows in the U.S as well.
7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interests?
I’m a PR and event management grad. I do a lot of the stuff that an indy label can do for us by myself so I haven’t actively looked at  labels. We’re definitely not adverse to it though. I’d love to work with Misfits Records . A guy can dream haha

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of punk and metal?
It’s been pretty great and the feedback has been nothing but positive. Because we live in the middle of nowhere it’s hard to get out there as much as we could if we lived in a larger city. Hopefully we can get out on the road more next year and turn some heads

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
The next Projects are a split with our friends Destroilet that we will be releasing on vinyl and our Jackest Night Trilogy disc.  We’re almost done writing both. We plan to write during the year and release a full length in the fall. We’re constantly getting closer as a band and it shows in the newer stuff. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
I love classic and 90s era skate punk stuff. I’m a giant Misfits fan. My first concert ever was a Sex pistols show on the Filthy Lucre tour. Tastes vary for each person in the band. Some of em are really into aggressive metal and some of em love that 80’s sound that you had mentioned in your review .
I’m really digging Propaghandi’s Supporting Caste right now. Bangers embrace is such a good song!

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Cheap whiskey, good pizza, bad horror movies and cheesy fantasy novels. I just finished rereading the whole Legend of Drizzt series from R.A. Salvatore . super fun! I try to get out and skate or bike as much as possible. We have some wicked trails around here.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Thanks for the review and the interview! It’s through independent music bloggers like yourself that we are able to spread the word , be heard and JACK THE PLANET!
